What You Need to Know About CDM2015 and the F10 Form

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) aim to improve health and safety in the construction industry by ensuring that health and safety considerations are integrated into the project from the design phase through to completion.

When is a CDM Notification Required?

1. Project Type: A notification is required when the construction project:

- Lasts longer than 30 working days and has more than 20 workers working simultaneously at any point, or

- Involves more than 500 person-days of construction work.

2. Duty Holder: The notification must be completed by the client, who has the legal responsibility to ensure health and safety compliance. This applies to domestic clients as well as commercial clients.

Completing a F10 Form

The notification is typically submitted using the F10 form, which is available from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website. Here’s how to complete it:

1. Project Title: Provide a clear title that identifies the project.

2. Project Address: Enter the location where the construction work will take place.

3. Client Details: Include the name, address, and contact information of the client.

4. Principal Designer Details: If appointed, detail the name, address, and contact information for the Principal Designer. If not appointed, state so.

5. Principal Contractor Details: If appointed, provide the name, address, and contact information for the Principal Contractor.

6. Description of the Project: Provide a brief description of the nature of the work. This should include the type of construction and any significant features.

7. Estimated Start Date: Indicate when the construction work is expected to start.

8. Estimated Completion Date: Provide an expected date for project completion.

9. Number of Workers: State the maximum number of workers who will be engaged on the site at any one time.

10. Initial Duration of the Project: Indicate the anticipated duration of the project in days.

Submission of the Notification

Once the F10 form is completed:

- Submit: You must submit the notification to the HSE at least 48 hours before the construction work begins.

- Keep a Copy: Retain a copy of the notification for your records.

- Display: Ensure that the relevant persons on site are made aware of the notification and its contents.

Summary

Following the CDM 2015 regulations ensures that health and safety are prioritised in constructions projects. It helps prevent incidents, injuries, and fatalities on site. It is vital to keep the lines of communication open between all parties involved to facilitate a safe working environment.
